A 36-year-old male injected a mixture of heroin and cocaine into his thigh. This is the result after 7 days where we can see necrosis all around the injected area. Necrosis is a form of cell injury which results in the premature death of cells in living tissue by autolysis. It is caused by factors external to the cell or tissue, such as infection, toxins, or trauma which result in the unregulated digestion of cell components. Debridement, referring to the removal of dead tissue by surgical or non-surgical means, is the standard therapy for necrosis. Depending on the severity of the necrosis, this may range from the removal of small patches of skin to the complete amputation of affected limbs or organs.
