As we come to the end of yet another Christmas season there is one celebrity death that we cannot forget to mention. The death of Kirsty MacColl. You will have heard her voice projecting in pubs all over the world over the last few weeks and that is due to her iconic duo with The Pogue’s – Fairytale of New York. Whenever you hear this song, there is no doubt someone will mention her unfortunate end. So, what exactly happened?
Kirsty MacColl rose to fame in 1987 when Fairytale of New York charted at the number 2 spot, becoming a Christmas favourite from the get-go! She continued recording music and had a few small television roles, but all of this came to an end on the 18th of December 2000 when MacColl was just 41 years of age.
MacColl was on holiday with her partner and two sons in Cozumel in Mexico. She and her sons went diving at the Chankanaab reef which is a designated diving area where boats and jet skis are not permitted to enter.
The trio were resurfacing from a dive when a speedboat entered the restricted area and was travelling at extreme speed. Kirsty’s eldest son Jamie who was 15 at the time was in the direct path of the boat so Kirsty pushed him out of the way. He only suffered from bruised ribs.
However, the speedboat ran over MacColl. She suffered extreme injuries and died instantly. Her exact injuries were quite gruesome as she was decapitated as well as having her chest and left leg almost severed.
A tragic death but her legacy will live on every Christmas.
