Celebrity Deaths: George Michael

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, more commonly known as George Michael was a famous English singer and songwriter. He is currently being played on all the radio songs with the beloved Wham! song ‘Last Christmas’. However, George Michael died on Christmas day 2016 aged just 53. But what happened to him?

In the early hours of Christmas day, George Michael was found dead by his partner. He died prematurely and it shocked the world. Due to a delay in finding a cause of death his funeral did not take place until the following march.

It was discovered that George Michael died of dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. What does all this mean?

Dilated cardiomyopathy is when the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood around the body effectively. This can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath and fainting due to the lack of oxygen being pumped to necessary tissues. It occurs in about 1 per 2500 people. It is more common in men and normally occurs in middle age. George Michael fits these criteria.

Myocarditis is the inflammation of the heart muscle. Sometimes there are no symptoms but sometimes shows similar symptoms to that of dilated cardiomyopathy. It can happen suddenly or be long-lasting. Again, not much is known about George Michael and his condition.

Fatty liver is caused by the storage of extra fat in the liver, and it can lead to liver damage and disease.

It was determined that George Michael died of natural causes. Dilated cardiomyopathy can be caused due to genetics or substance abuse. It is unknown what the cause was in this instance. Fatty liver is typically attributed to alcohol abuse but again can occur without alcohol consumption.
