Tar and asphalt burns are unique injuries because the chemical is difficult to remove without inflicting further tissue injury.

Successful intervention for hot asphalt burns requires immediate and effective cooling of the asphalt on the tissue followed by subsequent gradual removal of the cooled asphalt and early excision and grafting of appropriate injuries.
